Where should you eat and drink during Flagstaff's First Friday ArtWalk? Start with coffee or an early bite at Late for the Train, Firecreek Coffee Company, or Flagstaff Baking Co, then work through the breweries and bars that double as art stops — Dark Sky Brewing, Hops on Birch, Drinking Horn Mead Hall, Flagstaff Brewing Company, and Mother Road Brewing Company — with Awa Kava Bar as the alcohol-free pick. ArtWalk runs 5:00–9:00 PM (as of June 2026), it's free and self-guided, and every stop in this post sits in walkable downtown or just across the tracks on the Southside.
How the night works
First Friday ArtWalk happens the first Friday of every month in historic downtown Flagstaff. There's no ticket and no required path — you wander between galleries, studios, shops, and the food-and-drink spots that join in. Heritage Square is the hub: in the warmer months it hosts performances and vendors, and it's where the physical maps get handed out. During Car-Free First Fridays, Aspen Ave closes between Leroux St and San Francisco St for street performances and pop-up art, which makes the whole eat-stroll-repeat rhythm easier.
One local note before you head out: downtown sits at about 7,000 feet, and evenings cool off fast even in July. Bring a layer. Your 8:30 PM self will thank you.
Coffee and early bites (5:00–6:30 PM)
Eat before the crowds build. Three stops cover the start of the night:
- Late for the Train — coffee on Aspen Ave, steps from Heritage Square. The natural first stop if you're starting at the square and want caffeine for the full four hours.
- Firecreek Coffee Company — on Route 66. Handy if you're starting near the tracks and working north.
- Flagstaff Baking Co — on the Southside, across the tracks. Go on the early side; bakery cases anywhere don't last all evening.

Drinks on the walk — places that also show art
This is what makes First Friday feel different from a standard gallery night: several of downtown's bars and breweries hang work and join the walk. Lineups rotate month to month — the official list runs 25+ venues, and our directory tracks 40+ art-friendly stops — so treat these as the reliable core and check the map for the current month.

A word on pacing: between the 7,000-foot altitude and a four-hour evening, it pays to space your drink stops out. Awa Kava Bar exists for exactly this kind of night if you want the lounge feel without the proof.
A loop that works
If you want structure, here's a route we actually use:
- 5:00 — Heritage Square. Pick up a map, see what's happening on the square, and grab coffee at Late for the Train around the corner.
- 5:45 — Gallery Row. Work N San Francisco St: The Artists' Gallery, West of the Moon Gallery, Fire on the Mountain, and Bright Side Bookshop sit within about a block of each other.
- 6:45 — Birch Ave. Dark Sky's beer garden, then Hops on Birch, with the small studios in between.
- 7:30 — Leroux St and Route 66. The Weatherford Hotel for art and live music, then Drinking Horn Mead Hall and Flagstaff Brewing Company as you head toward the tracks.
- 8:15 — Southside. Cross the tracks for Phoenix Avenue Gallery and the Clay Center, then close with a pour at Mother Road Brewing Company — or something alcohol-free at Awa Kava Bar.
Run it in reverse if you'd rather end at Heritage Square — there's no wrong direction.
After 9 PM
The official hours wrap at 9:00, but the night doesn't have a hard stop: many venues stay open past the official end, and the bars and breweries above keep their own Friday-night hours. Treat anything after 9 as bonus time, and check individual venues if a late night is the plan.
A few honest caveats
- Hours in this post are current as of June 2026 (5:00–9:00 PM, per the organizers). Some older listings around the web still say 6–9 — that was the previous schedule.
- Winter editions have sometimes run shorter, and Nov–Apr scheduling isn't confirmed yet — if you're visiting then, confirm closer to the date.
- July 3, 2026 lands on Independence Day weekend, so it's worth double-checking individual venue participation that week.
