Car-free First Fridays
All season long, the block of Aspen Street alongside Heritage Square goes car-free on every First Friday, May through October — open to people, pedals, and art instead of parked cars. Every date this year is locked in. Whether it lasts past 2026 is up to us.
What goes car-free
On a normal day, the block of Aspen Street that runs along Heritage Square is a place you drive through and park on. On a car-free First Friday, the barricades go up and that same block becomes a room with no ceiling — street performers, pop-up art, live music, and space to actually stand in the road and talk to a neighbor.
It lines up with the ArtWalk's 5–9 PM window (exact barricade times aren't published per date, and can shift for setup). The practical effect is simple: more room to move, easier going with a stroller or a group, and a calmer, safer center of gravity for the whole night a block from Gallery Row.
The closed block
The gold line marks the Aspen Street block by Heritage Square. Exact extent can vary month to month — the 2025 pilot closed Aspen between Leroux and San Francisco.

Who's behind it
The push is championed by Dapper Dre, a Flagstaff performer and bike-safety advocate who's become the public face of car-free downtown nights. Creative Flagstaff credits the 2026 ArtWalk season as “generously underwritten by Dapper Dre, supporting Car-Free First Fridays with traffic closures on Aspen St,” and set up a donation-based Dapper Does It Fund to help cover the closures.

Dre's pitch is a small perspective shift: streets we usually hand to cars can, for one night, belong to people — and he's asked the city about removable bollards that would make closing downtown blocks for events easier down the road. To be clear, this is a privately-championed effort layered onto the ArtWalk, not a City of Flagstaff program.

Want it back in 2027?
Here's the honest part: car-free First Fridays are locked in for all of 2026, but 2027 isn't guaranteed. This is a community-championed effort — not a permanent city program — and whether it continues comes down to two groups: the City of Flagstaff and downtown's business owners.
If you love having the street open to people, the most useful thing you can do is say so, out loud, to the people who decide:
- Tell the city. A quick note or comment to the Flagstaff City Council and Mayor that you want car-free First Fridays to continue — and permanent infrastructure like removable bollards to make it easier — carries real weight when budgets and street policy get set.
- Tell the shops and galleries. Downtown businesses help decide whether the closures stick. When you visit on a car-free night, mention that the open street is exactly why you came and stayed.
- Show up — and bring people. A full, buzzing street is the strongest argument there is. Every month it's packed is another data point that car-free works for Flagstaff.
The case for keeping it makes itself when the street is full. The easiest way to help make that case is to be there.
How it started
The idea was proven with a one-night pilot on May 2, 2025, presented and funded by ARTx (Creative Flagstaff's art-activation program), which closed the same Aspen block from 5–9 PM. It worked — and the 2026 season turned it into a recurring, community-championed fixture.
Getting there car-free
- Bike it. The Center 2 Center community ride rolls from the Coconino Center for the Arts down to Heritage Square for the 5 PM start.
- Take the bus. Mountain Line's Downtown Connection Center is a couple of blocks from Heritage Square and every fixed route serves it. Standard fare is $1.25; most weekday-evening routes run past the 9 PM end, but check your route's last trip.
- Park once. Only that one Aspen block loses its on-street parking. The City Hall lot two blocks west is free after 5 PM — see the parking map for every free option.
