Where to park
Here's the secret about downtown Flagstaff: a ring of government lots is free after 5 PM — which is exactly when the walk starts. The metered streets in the core stay paid until 8 PM on Fridays, then they go free too. Either way you're a couple of minutes' walk from the art.
The short version
- Easiest free spot: the City Hall lot, 211 W Aspen Ave — free after 5 PM, about two blocks west of Heritage Square.
- Other government lots (City and County) are free after 5 PM on weekdays, all day on weekends.
- On-street meters in the core run until 8 PM on Fridays ($1/hour), then they're free. So street parking is free for the back half of the walk.
- Read the signs on side streets. A few residential blocks (parts of Birch, Leroux, Ashurst) are permit-only and enforced around the clock — don't assume every neighborhood street is free.

The free move
Point the car at the City Hall lot at 211 W Aspen Ave. It's free after 5 PM, holds around 100 cars (per the event organizer), and it's a flat two-block walk east down Aspen straight into Heritage Square and the car-free block. If it's full or closed for a market, the other City and County government lots downtown follow the same free-after-5 rule on weekdays.
That's genuinely the whole trick: park once, for free, and walk into the middle of it.
If you grab a street spot
Downtown's metered core is small — roughly Humphreys Street to San Francisco Street, and Cherry/Birch down to Route 66. Inside that box, meters run until 8 PM on Fridays at $1/hour (pay at the kiosk or the Flowbird app). After 8 PM it's free, so if you roll in later in the evening you can often grab a free spot right by the galleries.
Heads up: the city has approved a rate bump to $2/hour that's scheduled to start August 1, 2026 — check the kiosk for the current price. And the Heritage Square underground garage is privately run and paid, so it's not one of the free options.
One thing to watch
Some residential blocks just outside the core — parts of Birch, Leroux, and Ashurst, with more neighborhoods being added — are permit-only zones, and they can be enforced 24/7. That means you could get a ticket parking there in the evening even though the meters elsewhere are free by 8. The rule of thumb: if a block has permit signs, keep rolling; unsigned residential streets a little farther out are your free fallback.
Or skip the car entirely
The walk is a car-free event for a reason — it's nicest on foot or two wheels. The Center 2 Center bike ride rolls in for the 5 PM start, and Mountain Line's Downtown Connection Center is a couple of blocks from Heritage Square. More on both on the Car-Free page.
