The August 2026 First Friday ArtWalk lands on August 7 — theme: The Art of Dark Skies — and runs the usual 5:00–9:00 PM across downtown Flagstaff and the Southside. It's a theme this town has earned: Flagstaff was the world's first International Dark Sky City, and this month the galleries lean into it. Free, self-guided, 29 venues on the official map (per event producer Creative Flagstaff). Here's what's actually happening, with times.
The one-night-only stuff
- Angela Yamauchi at Sosta. The night-sky photographer — who brings a science and engineering background to her images — shows her work at Sosta with a reception from 4:00 to 6:00 PM and an artist talk at 5:00 PM on how stargazing sparks curiosity and imagination. Note the early start: the reception opens an hour before the walk itself.
- Strings at the Community Labyrinth. The Skylight City String Quartet plays live while you walk the lichen-covered boulder labyrinth above Sinclair Wash, from 5:30 PM until dark. Access is off Lone Tree Rd at Brannen Circle — follow the FUTS trail signs.
Getting there without a car
August is a Car-Free First Friday: the Aspen Street block by Heritage Square closes to cars for the night. The Center 2 Center community bike ride gathers at Coconino Center for the Arts at 4:00 PM — with complimentary Timberline Ice Cream — and rolls into Heritage Square right at the 5:00 PM start. Family-friendly, ride-your-own-pace.
Worth a stop this month
- Open Doors: Art in Action — the nonprofit gallery's current exhibit, Love Our Neighbor: Peace and Reconciliation, continues this month.
- Arizona Handmade / Fire on the Mountain Gallery — the truest dark-skies stop on the walk: glassblower George Averbeck's Dark Sky and Pluto Group vases were born from Flagstaff's night skies, shown alongside work from dozens of Arizona artists.
- Gwendolyn Waring Arts — the painter's Hospital Hill studio and native garden stay on the official map after joining in July; her Colorado Plateau oils read differently after dark.
- Bee Balm Studio — the Historic Ice House creative space opens its doors with visual-arts classes and workshops on display.
Where to start
Same advice as every month: start at Heritage Square, grab a paper map, then follow Gallery Row down N San Francisco Street and cross the tracks to the Southside when the crowds build. Or skip the paper and use the live map — every stop above is pinned. And since it's the Art of Dark Skies: when you're between galleries, look up. This is the city that dims its lights on purpose.
